Is it necessary to be spiritual?

Is it necessary to be spiritual? This question is asked by many. My simple answer is if we are human, we are spiritual (knowingly or unknowingly). Human are the only species on earth with fully developed reasoning power. That is the reason we ask WHY? For the so-called atheists, I feel sympathy, as they try to deny the facts. I am a man of science & technology. That is what makes me more spiritual. I believe in The Ultimate creator, because that is reality. Being an electrical engineer, I always give the example of electricity to get some idea of God. We can not see electricity, but we can experience its presence thru many manifestations like light, sound, power, etc. Question remains is can we deny the existence of electricity? Since the sensible answer is no, I correlate it with God. But remember, anything worldly is insufficient to correlate with God. God is like infinity in Mathematics, not so easily understood.

In the book of knowledge (VEDA), it is said, “a little is known and a little is unknown”. Meaning, we can comprehend a bit about God, but not fully. In Upanishads (the ancient & most authentic books on philosophy from India), it is mentioned that “It is near, It is far”. In contemplation, we may know more about God. In order to have peace of mind; we need to focus more to the inside of us, than letting our thoughts wander the outside world. As mentioned in Bhagavad Gita, we should control our senses like the tortoise which withdraws its head, tail & four legs, so that it is unaffected by the external world.

But this does not mean that we have forget about the external world, where we live or forget our duties and responsibilities to self, family, society, country & world. Bhagavad Gita is the amazing philosophical discourse between Sree Krishna & Arjuna, just before the epic war in Mahabharath, the greatest and biggest epic ever written. It is actually discussing more of the actions we have to do in day-to-day life than anything else. When we feel confused, depressed, undecided; then we can easily apply the amazing philosophies in Bhagavad Gita. By this, we shall know – what, when, where & WHY we have to do each action.

Spirituality makes us more human, lovable, adorable, humble, simple, ego-less, educated and real HUMAN. It makes us respect values. People say we don’t need spirituality or God to be human. As mentioned umpteen times, our humble reply is if you don’t accept GOD, accept GOOD.
